Semester at Sea Q & A

Updated: Apr 17, 2019

As you probably know if you are reading this blog, I will soon be leaving for the adventure of a lifetime! That’s right; in just four short days I will be boarding The World Odyssey and beginning my voyage around the world with Semester at Sea (SAS for short). Before I leave I thought I would answer some questions I’ve been asked about my upcoming voyage.

1. What is Semester at Sea?

SAS is a program that is run by the University of Virginia. Students from around the country and the world join together to sail around the world while taking classes and participating in field labs that correlate with their chosen majors and the countries we will be traveling to.

2. What will I be doing on the ship/ What are my classes?

-I will be taking 12 hours. The classes I am taking are Global Media, Contemporary World Literature, Media Ethics, and Newswriting.

-I will be working 2 hours a day at the ship campus store through the work study program.

- I will be participating in the Dance Club (I didn’t want to not dance for four months!).

-I also plan on sending articles back to my home school newspaper, The Pine Log (Here’s a link to the first article in the series: http://www.thepinelog.com/entertainment/article_10e27a00-9e1c-11e5-b732-e3ac55924091.html).

3. What am I most excited for?

I am really excited for the Taj Mahal in India and riding camels in Morocco! (But I’m really excited about basically everything about this trip)

4. How much do I get to bring?

I get to bring two big duffle bags and a carry on! I still have no idea how to pack for four months, but I figure as long as I have my passport, shot records, and malaria pills I’ll be ok.

5. Are you ready to go?

Yes, I can’t wait!!

I hope that answered your questions about my voyage, but feel free to leave a comment or contact me if you want any more information! My email for the semester is: andrea.gallier.sp16@semesteratsea.org . I’ll try to keep this as updated as possible and I should get a chance to post again before I leave!
